DSISD Fab Lab - Jad Jadeja

DSISD Fab Lab

Jad Jadeja leads the DSISD Fab Lab.  He has 25 years in technology, including 2 start up companies and research.  He joined the staff at DSISD in 2007 operating the computer lab, then come on full time in 2011.

Schools are very competitive today.  Students need to learn that failure offers a very valuable lesson and that failures generate creativity.  He wants his students to think creatively as there is no recipe for innovation.  He has had students from DSISD Fab Lab go on to some great opportunities, such as the student who is now interning at Google; a student went to UTSA and was immediately transferred because her first year classes at UTSA had already been learned at Dripping Springs - she is now an intern at NASA.  He has a group of young ladies who include 4 engineering students and 2 programming students who have created a prosthetic hand on a 3-D printer.  His class is currently working on a printed circuit board and has almost mastered it.

His objectives are to continue to expand the engineering program from current of:
* Programming
* Robotics I & II
CAD
Engineering I & II
Computer Science

DS Club Foundation by Karlon Cox

Dripping Springs Rotary Club Foundation

Karlon Cox is not only the club president, but current chair of the Dripping Springs Rotary Club Foundation.  He discussed the reason we formed the foundation was to separate club operations from donations to club projects.  The first fundraiser was the Home And Garden Show in 2017, which made about $8K and was the seed money for the foundation.  The foundation raised $19K this year.

The Foundation Board consists of:  Karlon Cox, Sharon Collier, Howard Lott, and Robert Avera.  The board should be elected annually and include rotating terms so there is always consistency and historical knowledge.  The board set the policy this year that no more than 25% of funds raised in any one year can be spent on club projects until the corpus funds are increased enough to be sustainable.

The IRS rulings regarding non-profit boards are one of the reasons the club board and the foundation board should not be identical.  If we wanted to engage in Rotary International matching grants, we would use foundation money, not club money.  There was a very healthy discussion of the foundation purpose, and some good suggestions were made to move forward in growing a health foundation and foundation board.
