Stories
Ed Kuny, The Scheib Opportunity Center
The Scheib Center provides mental health and mental disability services to residents in San Marcos and Hays County mainly to those without insurance and those on Medicaid. Our two service areas are: Mental Health Services and services to those with mental disabilities, which today is known as Intellectually Developmentally Disabled.
Ed Kuny, a board member with the Scheib Center in San Marcos spoke passionately about the Center, resources and the need for more mental health funding in Texas. Were you aware that the great state of Texas is 48th in spending on mental health?  20% of the population suffers from persistent biological mental illness - a staggering number.

The Scheib Center started as a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) corporation in 1971 with money bequeathed by Dr. and Mrs. Buck Scheib for the purpose of providing services to the developmently disabled and emotionally disturbed individuals in the San Marcos/Hays County Area.  The service programs were in partnership with the Texas Department of MHMR.  The Scheib Center provided the buildings and MHMR provided the money and staff for the services.  Fast forward to today where the Center enjoys a 3 acre campus in San Marcos that includes an activity hall, youth crisis respite center, veterans services, suicide prevention and juvenile center. There is a mobile outreach crisis team on site that includes 2 trained Hays County Deputies and San Marcos has 3 dedicated officers trained for response.

The center partners with Hill Country MHDD, who provides the staff and services while the Scheib Center provides the facilities, maintenance, janitorial, etc.  The center currently serves over 8,500 Hays County citizens with funding from Hays County, City of San Marcos, donations and fund raising.
